Investigation into coach's shooting wraps up
WILLIAMSON, W.Va. -- Criminal charges are expected soon in a case involving the shooting of Phelps High School football coach David Jones.
Mingo County Prosecuting Attorney Jonathan "Duke" Jewell tells EKB News that the investigation is complete and he has interviewed Jones to "clarify some issues and fill in some missing pieces."
As a result, he says he is directing the Mingo County Sheriff's Office to file a charge of felony malicious assault against Dennis Paige Jr. That action will occur in Mingo County Magistrate Court and could come as soon as Monday.
Paige has not been charged or arrested at this time.
Jones was shot early on the morning of July 26, during an altercation at his home in Red Jacket. Police have not released any details about what led up to the incident. He sustained a gunshot wound to the abdomen, but has since been released from the hospital and has resumed his coaching duties.
Jones was a standout football player at Belfry High School, before playing with the University of Kentucky. After college, he signed to play for the Baltimore Ravens. He later returned home to work as an assistant coach at Belfry High School, before becoming head coach of Phelps last year.
